The Summer You Found Me (The Summer Series Book 3) Kindle Edition

KATE
I tore out of rehab to win my husband back. It’ll work, too. He just needs to see that I’m clean, that I’m on my feet again.

Until that happens, though, I’ve only got one guy in my corner—Beck, my husband’s best friend, who takes me in against his will and keeps me sane.

Living with Beck is easier than I expected. And
fun. Except I’ve got a long history of wanting things I’m not supposed to want.

And Beck may be the most dangerous of them all.

BECK
Kate had nowhere else to go—helping her out is the right thing to do. Though if she thinks the fact that she’s still married to my best friend means she’s safe walking around my house in nothing but a t-shirt…well, I’m somewhat less sure.

Because maybe Caleb could overlook her. Maybe Caleb could fail to notice her.

But from the moment we met, Kate’s been the only thing I could see. And no matter what she’s telling herself, she wants me just as badly as I want her.

Elizabeth O'Roark has a bunch of degrees she does not use and gave up working as a medical writer to craft grumpy, alpha heroes and the flawed women who love them. When not writing, she likes to spend time with her three kids, who are now teenagers and wish she'd find a different way to spend time. She can be found on Facebook feverishly debating whether or not "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie and telling people to read "The Hating Game", which she did not write but wishes she had.

This is a story I was so desperately eager for. The forbidden aspect had me instantly hooked but, The Summer You Found Me was so much more than that. Brimming with sexual tension, passion, angst, emotion, spice and then some, this book was unputdownable.“𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐈 𝐬𝐚𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮, 𝐈 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈’𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐢𝐭. I love getting to know the man behind the grump and Beck irrevocably stole my heart. The way he loved Kate just for exactly who she was. He pushed and he challenged…he was so incredibly patient, tender and vulnerable. Those intense protective vibes with a beautiful heart that he kept hidden. It was wholly impossible not to fall for him. Kate, what a heroine. Talk about a riot of emotions. She created such a mix of feelings within me about her but at the same time, my heart was so full of empathy for her. I found myself rooting for her and wanting her to have happiness even in the moments she left me questioning her actions. I wanted better and for her to do better. Her journey of losing and finding herself was one that was at times heartbreaking and in the end so inspiring. She could’ve succumbed to the obstacles and pain of her past but she persevered. Kate’s redemption story is now on my list of my favorites. This Summer series just gets better and better with each book making it unbelievably hard to choose a favorite. I am already counting the seconds to the next book!“𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨 𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐬. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞. The author often tackles different aspects of a “difficult heroine” with her FMCS, but with this book we are given the quintessential “unlikable heroine” in Kate. As much as I love the unlikable heroine archetype in all its forms, even I found it hard to support Kate’s wrongs at some points in her story. You know how there’s ow drama in books? This is like reading the other woman’s story. If the other woman was a bit of an antihero. Yet I will like a prickly unlikable heroine out of sheer spite, bcs you know you let much worse slide with a bookish man. Anyway, Kate may be a total savage and unapologetically ruthless and a bit of an a-hole with a busload of baggage, but once you see beneath the surface, you get it. Even her career is so perfect for her bossy personality type. Her insecurities are compounded by self loathing and a harsh past, and it all manifests as fortified armor of rage and smartassery. Kate maybe deeply flawed, but inside she’s just a lonely girl with demons and no filter. Not everything she does is justifiable, but in a way it’s understandable.

Through all of it, Beck’s utter and endless devotion to her shows you that if someone truly loves you, they will embrace you as is, dark side and all. They’re the ultimate grumpy pair, with a toxic communication style and a healthy dose of self sabotage, but they love each other’s best and worst parts. And they really show each other the worst of them, in turns sassy and absolutely savage with each other. I wanted to both give them hugs and at the same time knock their heads together.

This is like a direct counterpart to Caleb’s story (you know the background if you’ve read the last book) and Caleb does come off looking not great from Kate’s pov, but it just goes to show the breakdown of a marriage from opposite sides of it.

This series is darker, angstier, and rawer than previous EO works, and this book especially feels the darkest (not in a dark romance way), angstiest, and rawest one so far. The humor is darker, the vibe is getting seggsier. A lot of Kate’s journey (and Beck’s along with it) is agonizing, but I could not get enough of it. As witnessed by me writing this review at 4 am hours after starting the book earlier tonight. I don’t know if and how the angst can be dialed up in this series, but I sure can’t wait to experience it.

I'm so happy we finally got Kate and Becks story!!! Kate is still grieving the loss of her marriage & baby & starts struggling with addiction. After coming back from rehab clean & ready to make things right with her husband she finds that he's moving on with his life without her. (Please read Caleb's story!!!! Book 2). She's not giving up easily but has no one or no place to turn to.

Her husbands best friend, Beck is giving her a place to stay while she gets back on her feet. Beck has loved Kate since he first met her, he's always been there for her even when her husband wasn't. He's the definition of solid and steady. He just wishes she felt the same for him as he feels for her. Can he get her to see that Caleb is her past and they could have a future if only she would notice his true feelings for her.

Becks strong & steady attitude & his ability to see Kate for more than her past, for more than her struggles is beautiful. He also isn't afraid to give her a kick in the ass when she needs it!

After reading The Summer I Saved You, I just knew Kate and Beck would have an epic story waiting next. Kate is trying to win back her soon to be ex-husband, Caleb, from the previous book. Beck is his best friend, but at the moment, he is also Kate's only friend. She has had a rough journey, growing up without much unconditional support and affection and grieving a devastating loss. Now, Kate is trying to start over after coming out of rehab. She is a divisive heroine because she's trying to sabotage Caleb and Lucie's relationship and she's both conniving and persuasive. Despite these manipulative qualities, I was sympathetic towards her because of the stark pain underneath. She is lonely and learned to swim with sharks on her own, not realizing that she deserves more and has the capacity to give. I felt her pain and hurting and it made her relatable despite her vengeance streak.

Her transformation from someone who hit rock bottom and is climbing her way back up is very much two steps forward and one step back. Beck is there to be a safe place to land although he'd obviously prefer more, but knows that Kate is like a bomb ready to go off and has to proceed with caution. I loved how Beck didn't try to mince words or edge around uncomfortable topics, yet he saw Kate in a way that no one else did or ever will. I admired the constant conflict within Kate to try to do better, but also the temptation to slide back, because recovery for an addict is a never-ending battle. She could be a villain and a survivor, but she is also compassionate and loving. This aspect of the story kept me riveted because I was fascinated by Kate, how someone so intelligent and incredible has so many flaws, and yet she has the ability to walk around with nothing but confidence and wield her beauty and sensuality like a super power. The more she kept failing and deceiving, while wanting to succeed, the more I liked her because I knew she had these complex layers and at her core, a desire to love and be loved unconditionally. Having a goal kept her from back sliding, but goals can change and people can change, too.

Elizabeth O' Roark delivered in all the ways for this book. Kate is the opposite of a doormat and may be off putting to some readers especially any Lucie fans, but I was intrigued by her. She has a strong and adventurous personality and Beck is definitely the right match for her because he is even stronger, but also steady and secure while always knowing what she needs. Kate and Beck pull out all the stops on the gut wrenching, emotional and angst barometer and I enjoyed every page of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Equilibrio perfecto!

5.0 out of 5 stars Complicated - but worth the journey!
Reviewed in Canada on January 26, 2024
This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year - I would probably read just about anything Elizabeth O'Roark writes at this point - but after some preliminary reviews I wasn't sure I was going to love it as much as I had hoped. I needn't have worried.

I will say - Kate is not a character that you're going to easily be able to cheer for, but over the course of the story she is so well fleshed out that I found it impossible not to fall in love with her eventually. I actually think that's what really made this book a 5 star read for me. She's a challenge, she's really going through something raw and real and terrible and the way she deals with it is not necessarily easy to digest, but it's so honest and realistic in so many ways. And Beck is just a super dream, if we're being honest. He's also imperfect, but he has that amazing balance of rough around the edges while being impossibly sturdy and loving to those that he cares about without being entirely self sacrificing.

I love this - it's worth pushing through the frustration that you will almost certainly feel in the first half of the story. The growth of the characters and the very real love story is worth it - if that's what you're into.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is so emotional and made me cry so much. Loved it.
5 stars!!

I read this book on a plane - not a good book to read in public. One to read locked in your room with a big box of tissues! I have never cried so much when reading a book. But there is a HEA.

I read the previous book in this series and at the time was intrigued by Kate and Beck's story. Sort of wanted to reread the summer I saved you first (because its been a while) but jumped straight into this.

Kate's backstory is so sad... her childhood in foster care, the one time she was nearly adopted and the woman disappearing without notice. And finally her relationship with Caleb, unplanned pregnancy, her fierce love for her unborn baby and then the tragedy that she lost Hannah a few minutes after birth which sent her into her downward spiral and addiction.
Beck has loved Kate since he first met her, but she was already with his best friend.
He has never had a real relationship and has frequent hook ups with customers from the bar and friends with benefits.
He has always been a good friend to Kate. He helped her prepare for the baby during her previous pregnancy, while Caleb was busy working, and he used to defend her and care for her.
The thought of getting back with Caleb got Kate through rehab and she is devastated when he has moved on. Kate is a multi-dimensional character and some of her choices are not good. She lies to her sponsor and doesn't keep up with meetings or the things she needs to do to stay clean. She becomes obsessed with Caleb's new relationship with Lucie, especially because she has 2 children and Caleb seems to be more involved with them than he was with their baby during her pregnancy.
But her actions are mostly driven by overwhelming grief and I cried so much. For Kate, the loss or her newborn daughter was overwhelming and took over her whole life. She had succeeded despite her background in Foster Care and had overcome so much, but all she can see is the failures since Hannah died.
She ia such a believable character and she totally deserves the love of a good man like Beck. She is strong, resilient, a survivor. I hated those first 2 interviews she went to where they saw her weakness and not her strengths.

Beck sees Kate as she is and loves her as she is and I love them together. They really are made for each other.

I would like more of the HEA. More epilogues. More insight into Kate & Becks future - what does their family look like? What happens to Beck's friendship with Caleb & the rest of their friendship group? What kind of relationship does Kate go on to have with Lucie?

4.0 out of 5 stars Kate & Beck.
Reviewed in Canada on January 28, 2024
I am going to start by saying I love this whole series. But because I do, this one was a bit harder to read.

Kate is extremely real in the sense that she is very flawed and tbh that makes her hard to root for. I think people deserve second chances but they need to show some growth and I kept waiting for it but she kept digging that hole deeper. It’s not until the very end that we see her make a real effort at moving forward without hurting everyone around.

Most of the book is also from her point of view and I almost wish we got more of Beck’s.

I debated how highly to rate this one but ultimately the writing is beautiful and I will keep recommending this series.
